TNT Extends Final Season Of THE CLOSER To Ready Potential Spinoff

Hello Folks

EW's Lynette Rice and James Hibberd report today that TNT has ordered six additional episodes for the final season of "The Closer" to prepare for a potential spinoff of the successful series.

10 previously announced episodes are expected to air this summer, with another five launching in the winter. And now, with the additional order, "The Closer" will return for another six episodes in the summer of 2012. These six episode will serve as a farewell for Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick), and opening the door for a possible spinoff with a new central character.

The working title of the new show is "Major Crimes", and it centers on what's happening when criminals aren't sent to death row. The "maddening and brutally realistic" behind-the-scenes dealmaking shenanigans is what seems to pave the way for Brenda's departure.

For a bit more info about the status of the potential spinoff at this point, hit the link above.

And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going.”

FRINGE, LIE TO ME, BONES, HOUSE - Will They Be Back In The Fall?

At FOX' portion of the TCA press tour, FOX Entertainment president Kevin Riley took the stage to give some information on the current status of several shows, and how their chances are of being back next fall.

Taken from TVLine's Michael Ausiello.

- "Lie To Me" is not doomed because it didn't get a full-season order this year. "“We’ve got a lot of midseason shows that we’re rolling out and we just have to get a little deeper into the spring and size everything up [before discussing another season]… We’d like to believe there’s [a future] for Lie to Me. It delivers a very loyal audience wherever we put it.". It was "a needs thing," he added.

- Riley hopes that the fans of "Fringe" will follow the show to its new Friday timeslot. He begs critics "not to write the eulogy prematurely. It’s a show we’re very passionate about. I want the audience to transfer to Friday. I would be heartbroken if it went away. But if the fans stick with us the show could be on the air for many years.”

- Riley expects both "House" and "Bones" to return next season, but there are several deals that need to be closed first for that to happen.

- On failed comedy "Running Wilde", Riley said that the show took too long to find its creative footing. “The show [eventually] found itself,” he added, “but it was too little too late.”

It's TCA day for ABC today, and the network has opened up with a few early renewals.

"Grey's Anatomy", "Private Practice", "Castle", "The Middle", "Cougar Tow" and "Modern Family" have all been officially renewed for next season.

Two shows are missing, though: "Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers & Sisters"...

The renewal for the first show is more of a contract issue. Marc Cherry has two more seasons under his contract, but Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria all see their current contracts come to an end after the current season. Negotiations are underway, though, to get them back for more.

In the case of "Brothers & Sisters", that show can be considered on the bubble.

Starz has announced that the show will definitely get a second season, with a replacement for Andy Whitfield, who is currently being treated for cancer, being announced soon. Says Starz president Chris Albrecht: “We don’t have casting news for you today, but are confident that we [will find an actor] who can ably step into Spartacus’ sandals — although we will never be able to replace Andy Whitfield.”

- Starz has also announced that the next season of "Torchwood" will have a new subtitle "Miracle Day". Basically, the new season deals with a miracle indeed, and the question of what happens when everyone in the entire world becomes immortal.

TVLine Is Up And Running - First Scoops

Hello Folks,

and welcome to 2011. Yeah, I know it's a bit late, but this is my first post this year, so there…

And to start the new year, we all got a new gift in terms of TV news. Michael Ausiello, formerly of TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly, today launched his own TV-centric website TV Line. And he has some great TV reporter talent aboard in his staff, including Matt Webb Mitovich or Megan Masters, for example. As a rabid follower and reporter of all things TV, I expect this site to become the go-to place of the TV news world fast. If I were you, I'd bookmark it fast.

And to start, there are some scoops on it worth mentioning.

- Damian Lewis ("Life") has joined Claire Danes in "Homeland", a Showtime drama pilot about a CIA officer (Danes) who suspects that an American soldier who escaped years of capture in Iraq is now part of a terrorist plot by Al Quaeda. Laura Fraser and Diego Klattenhoff ("Men in Trees", "Mercy") also star.

- In other pilot casting news, Molly Sims ("Las Vegas") and Faizon Love have joined Jason Lee in the Adult Swim comedy pilot "The Jon Johnsenson Story". Malcolm David Kelley ("Lost") and Kevin Pollak are also aboard the project about a teenage skateboarding champ who falls into a coma for 25 years after an accident.

- Joel David Moore ("Bones") has landed a guest starring part on CBS' "Hawaii Five-O", playing the director of a tsunami tracking office in Honolulu in episode 15. When a few big waves are coming and his boss goes missing, he becomes an asset for McGarrett and his team. His appearance is set for episode 15.

- Jason Wiles will guest star in a February episode of "Castle", playing an old friend of Rick's, who becomes entangled in a murder case.

- Mary Lynn Rajskub is going to appear in a guest spot on FOX' "Raising Hope", where she'll play the wife of cousin Mike (Skyler Stone). The episode is set for February.

OK, that's enough for the moment. Oh, and don't worry, I will still cover all the important news places. I just thought you might want to know that there's a big new one out there...
