EW's Lynette Rice and James Hibberd report today that TNT has ordered six additional episodes for the final season of "The Closer" to prepare for a potential spinoff of the successful series.
10 previously announced episodes are expected to air this summer, with another five launching in the winter. And now, with the additional order, "The Closer" will return for another six episodes in the summer of 2012. These six episode will serve as a farewell for Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick), and opening the door for a possible spinoff with a new central character.
The working title of the new show is "Major Crimes", and it centers on what's happening when criminals aren't sent to death row. The "maddening and brutally realistic" behind-the-scenes dealmaking shenanigans is what seems to pave the way for Brenda's departure.
