Yet Another Familiar Face Heading To CHUCK

It has now officially come to the point when we should change the term "stunt casting" simply to "Chuck casting"…

In another spectacular move, former" James Bond" actor Timothy Dalton has joined the cast of "Chuck" in a recurring part, per EW's Michael Ausiello.

Details of his role are being kept secret, but it contains a connection to Chuck's mom (Linda Hamilton). His first appearance will be in the seventh episode of the new season, titled "Chuck Vs. the First Fight".

Devon Sawa Meets NIKITA, Stuart Townsend Is XIII

Hello Folks

"Nikita" premiers September 9 at 9 PM.

Additionally, per the Hollywood Reporter, Stuart Townsend ("Night Stalker", "Robot Chicken") has grabbed the lead of the upcoming conspiracy series "XIII".

Townsend will play the titular secret agent who resembles Jason Bourne in the fact that he has no recollection of his past, and tries to uncover his true identity while being hunted by an anti-government organization.

"XIII" is based on Jean Van Hamme's graphic novel of the same name, which has sold 13 million copies around the globe since its launch 25 years ago. The show will by Canada's Prodigy Pictures and France's Cipango. It will first air on Showcase in Canada and on Canal Plus in France next spring.

The episode is described as the "origin story of Robin Sparkles", "a prequel to both ‘Let’s Go to the Mall’ and ‘Sandcastles in the Sand" by showrunners/creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.

USA Sets Fall And Midseason Return Dates, Schedules FACING KATE

Hello Folks

USA has announced its return dates for several of its shows, with some of them coming back earlier than in previous years.

"Psych" is set to return on Wednesday, November 10, while "Burn Notice" will continue its current season on Thursday, November 11. Both shows are set for 10/9c.

Then in the new year, "White Collar" is set to come back in January, alongside USA's newest drama "Facing Kate". Here is the logline:

FACING KATE centers on Kate Reed (Sarah Shahi), a top litigator frustrated with the endless bureaucracy and daily injustices she witnesses, who turns on the system to become the ultimate anti-lawyer: a mediator. Using her knowledge of the law, along with her savvy, intuition and a whatever-it-takes approach to resolving conflict, Kate finds the middle ground for a wide variety of adversaries -- from Fortune 500 corporations to bitter divorces. After the death of her father, she finds herself at odds with the new boss, her stepmother Lauren Reed (Virginia Williams)...and in bed with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Justin Patrick (Michael Trucco), a top gun in the DA's office. Helping her keep all of this chaos at bay is her trusted, geek-chic assistant Leonardo (Baron Vaughn).

Sam Page To GOSSIP GIRL, Michael Ealy To
COMMON LAW, Chris Vance To DEXTER, More

Hello Folks

- Michael Ealy ("FlashForward"), who will be seen on the second season of "The Good Wife" in the fall, has been added to the cast of USA's buddy police dramedy "Common Law" as the co-lead. - Chad Faust ("The 4400") has been cast in FOX' highly anticipated new fall drama "Lone Star". He will play Harrison, the rough ex-husband of Cat Thatcher (Adrianne Palicki). Per the official description, Harrison is Cat's "mistake carried over from high school. What was charming about him at seventeen is less than attractive in a grown man with adult responsibilities that until now, he has not wanted to shoulder. But his motorcycle-riding, noncommittal, unfaithful-husband ways are behind him, or so he claims, and he’s back in town now, ready to prove that he’s changed."

Per the Hollywood Reporter, Kate Micucci ("Scrubs", "Til Death") has joined the cast of FOX' upcoming comedy "Raising Hope" in a recurring part. Micucci had played Michelle, the main character's cousin in the pilot. After that character was cut from the show, creator Greg Garcia created another character to keep her in the cast: Shelly, the owner of a baby and doggy day care center, who plays the ukulele, like Micucci, who is also a singer, does in real life.

- TV Guide's Kate Stanhope is reporting that Eden Riegel has been tapped to guest star in the fourth episode of the next season of "Castle" on ABC, playing Rachel Goldstein, sister to a man who got killed by an antique pistol.

Victor Webster, Ken Baumann To CASTLE, NBC Cuts PERSONS UNKNOWN Short

Hello Folks

Looks like Rick Castle will have a lot of competition coming up, and not just on one front…

EW's Michael Ausiello reports today that Victor Webster ("Melrose Place", "Charmed") has landed a juicy recurring role on ABC's "Castle" next season.

Webster will appear first in the new season's fourth episode as Josh Davidson, who is Beckett's (Stana Katic) new flame. His first appearance will be through a visit to the precinct. Unlike Beckett's previous lovers, Josh is not in law enforcement.
Additionally, ABC has announced that Ken Baumann ("The Secret Life Of The American Teenager") has also joined the cast in a recurring role, to woo one of the other leading ladies. He will play Alexis' (Molly Quinn) first boyfriend.

Elsewhere, NBC has decided to cut the run of its summer series "Persons Unknown" short.
The Futon Critic reports that the show's 10th episode, "Identity", will air on August 21 at 8/7c. The next episode, "Seven Sacrifices" will then turn up online, before the two-hour finale, dubbed "And Then There Was One" and "Shadows in the Cave", will air on August 28 at 8/7c.

Britney Spears Goes GLEE, Bret Harrison To V, Judd Hirsch Visits WAREHOUSE 13; More

Hello Folks

Quite a few fresh casting reports surfaced in the last 12 hours.

- The Hollywood Reporter reports that not only will there be a Britney Spears-themed episode in the next season of "Glee" on FOX, but the trade has now confirmed that the singer will appear on the show as well, at least in a few scenes.
"Britney, I think 100%, is going to be on the episode. She is going to join us for a couple of scenes," said creator Rya Murphy told Ryan Seacrest. He added that the episode will not make fun of Spears' turmoil from the last few years, but will focus on her accomplishments as a singer. "We're handling Britney with kid gloves".

From EW's Michael Ausiello:

- Bret Harrison ("Reaper") has joined the cast of the upcoming sophomore season of ABC's "V". He will recur as Dr. Sydney Miller, an evolutionary biologist who might know what caused the sky to turn red in last season's finale. His first appearance is set for episode 2.

- Judd Hirsch will guest star on "Warehouse 13" in the show's first stand-alone holiday episode, which will of course air later in the year. Hirsch plays Artie's father.
Additionally, Paul Blackthorne ("The Gates", "The Dresden Files") will also be guesting in the episode, playing a workaholic running afoul of a thief with a fetish for Santa.

- Chris Parnell ("Saturday Night Live", "30 Rock") will visit "Eureka" around Christmas. He'll play a Global Dynamics scientist who runs an experiment during an office Christmas party that doesn't go well.

- Eric Winter ("Brothers & Sisters") will be appearing on "The Mentalist" next season, playing a fooball player-turned FBI agent, who will start flirting with Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti). Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) is surely not gonna like that…

- Bonita Friedericy, who plays General Beckman on NBC's "Chuck", has been promoted to a full series regular for next season. Means, we get to see more of her, including her lower body.

- Kevin Alejandro, who currently recurs on "True Blood" as Jesus, the potential love interest for Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), has joined the cast of "Parenthood" on NBC. He is set to recur as a potential love interest for Sarah (Lauren Graham). But, as we know, he won't be the only one wooing the former Gilmore Girl.

- Zosia Mamet (Director David Mamet's daughter; "The United States Of Tara") has also joined "Parenthood" in a recurring part. She plays Kelsey, the upper-class new BFF of Amber (Mae Whitman), which poses some problems for Sarah.

FOX Pushes HUMAN TARGET Premiere Back One Week

Hello Folks

FOX has just announced via a press release that it has pushed the second season premiere of its action drama "Human Target" back one week.

The show, which was originally set to launch its sophomore season on Friday, September 24, will now premiere a week later, on Friday, October 1, at 8 PM ET/PT.

The fall season of "The Good Guys" is not affected, and will still bow on September 24, as previously announced.

TCA Press Tour: ENTOURAGE To End Next Year, A Movie Might Come

Yesterday was the last day of this year's TCA summer press tour, where cable stations like Starz and HBO held their panels.

There's not too much to report about them, but one thing sure is.

HBO has announced that "Entourage" will come to an end next year, and the last season will be an abbreviated one. But there might be more "Entourage" down the road, and on a much bigger screen.

"The plan right now is to finish up this season and we're not clear exactly how many [episodes], we'll do a shorter order next season to finish up. We had talked about six," HBO Co-President of Programing, Richard Plepler said. "[Creator Doug Ellin] clearly wants to write [an 'Entourage' film] but he also wants to do it so the storytelling makes sense. Clearly he's thinking about how the show will end, he's already pitched other shows to us, we're in a long-term relationship with Doug Ellin. I would expect that in the next couple years you'll see him up here with another show."

Zach Gilford Joins OFF THE MAP

Hello Folks

EW's Michael Ausiello reports today that Zach Gilford, who is best known for his portrayal of Matt Saracen on "Friday Night Lights", has joined the cast of ABC's medical drama "Off The Map" as a series regular.

Gilford will play a plastic surgeon on the show, and describes the still-developing character as follows: "The character is still being written, but I’ve heard him described as kind of an all-American frat boy. [Series creator Jenna Bans] told me she loves FNL, but wants to distance me from that role as much as possible. [Something] that excited me.”

TORCHWOOD Season Title Announced - THE NEW WORLD

Hello Folks

The Hollywood Reporter reports today that the new season of "Torchwood" which will air on Starz next year, has gotten a title.

"Torchwood: The New World"

Creator Russell T. Davies and executive producer Julie Gardner also talked about the storyline for the new season, which uses "Children Of Earth" as a template.

It centers on CIA agent Rex and analyst Ester who are fighting a global alien issue. "Torchwood" is destroyed and disbanded and has become sort of a legend, which is referred to only in whispers. Rex and Ester end up on the run and are looking for the help of Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Gwen (Eve Myles).

Says Davies: "The two teams coming together is a big part of the story -- are they friends or enemies? There's a lot of sparks and excitement."

"We definitely have a really big story to tell," Gardner added. "It's absolutely rebooted to welcome in a new audience."

The ten new episodes are said to tell a self-contained story.

Since the show airs on Starz, it could have a bigger chance of staying more true to the original, with the violence and nudity being less of a problem there.

"I've always had loose standards and practices," Davies said. "If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely ... [but] there's nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene -- it's probably hard to make that happen in a thriller."

Megan Boone Joins LAW & ORDER: LA

Per Deadline's Nellie Andreeva, Megan Boone has joined the cast of the upcoming fresh spinoff "Law & Order: Los Angeles" as a series regular.

Boone is set to play a new DDA, with the tentative name of Megan Gander.

The show will split the episodes between two ADAs, played by Alfred Molina and Terrence Howard. After Regina Hall was cast to play Eva Price, the assistant to Molina's ADA, the other, Howard's character, of course needed his own DDA as well.

Sebastian Roché Goes SUPERNATURAL

After his turn as an evil shapeshifter on "Fringe", french-born actor Sebastian Roché is staying in the realm of "out there".

Fancast's Matt Mitovich reports that Roché will appear in the sixth season's third episode, titled "The Third Man" as Balthazar, an angel and soldier friend of Castiel's.

For even more spoilery info about Roché's part, hit the link above.

Jane Badler "Returns" To V

ABC has just officially announced via a press release that Jane Badler has been tapped to play Anna's (Morena Baccarin) mother Diana on "V".

As most of you know, Badler played the leader of the Visitors in the original series back in the 80s. Now she plays a new incarnation of Diana.

Anna is keeping her mother prisoner on the mother ship of the Vs, in a place not seen before that looks like the Visitor's home planet.

Badler's first appearance will occur in the season premiere in November.

Massive Casting Update

Hello Folks

First off, a personal note:

After roughly a year of working only part-time, I am now back to work full-time. This means the time I can devote to this blog is occasionally more limited than it was before. But don't fret, I will still be around, and if something big happens in TV land, I will update ASAP, as I still check all my sources very regularly each day. Just the smaller bits will sometimes have to wait a bit longer, and will be served in bulks, just like the following casting update.

OK, enough about me.

From EW's Michael Ausiello:

- Andie McDowell and Rosa Blasi ("Make It Or Break It") are joining the cast of FOX' upcoming drama "Lone Star". McDowell is nearing a deal to play the love interest of the oil tycoon played by Jon Voight, while Blasi will recur as Blake, trophy-wife of the Lady Macbeth kind to Mark Deklin's character.

- Laura Bell Bundy will be recurring on the upcoming sixth season of "How I Met Your Mother", playing Robin's (Cobie Smulders) new co-host on "Metro News One", after Don (Ben Koldyke) has left town in last season's finale.

- Richard Schiff ("Past Life") has joined the cast of CBS' midseason spinoff "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior". He will play FBI director Jack Fickler.

-Christopher McDonald is the latest addition to CBS's new legal drama "Harry's Law". He recurs from the second episode on as Thomas “Tommy” Jefferson, a "fast-talking, attention-seeking lawyer whose office is perma-lit for press conferences".

- Carol Burnett is cast as Sue Sylvester's (Jane Lynch) mother on FOX' "Glee". So far, only some details of Sue's Nazi-hunting mom have surfaced, so this should shed a whole different light on things next season.

- Lou Ferrigno ("The Incredible Hulk") has landed a guest spot on NBC's upcoming fourth season of "Chuck". In the second episode, he will play the bodyguard of an evil model/spy, played by Karolina Kurkova.

- Dallas Roberts ("Rubicon", "The L Word") has landed a potentially recurring part on the second season of CBS' "The Good Wife", playing Alicia's (Julianna Margulies) gay brother. Don't expect the sexual orientation to be a big issue, though. “We just thought [it would be interesting] if it didn’t matter," exec producer Robert King explained.

- Courtney Ford ("Dexter") has tapped a ptoentially recurring role on "The Vampire Diaries" over at The CW. She will play a grad student who helps Elena, Alaric and Damon in their research on Isobel.

And just to prove that this is not a copy of Ausiello's blog - from TV Guide:

- Edward James Olmos ("Battlestar Galactica"; "Miami Vice") will guest star in an upcoming October episode of "CSI: NY", playing a former gang leader who was put away 15 years ago by Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise). After his release from prison, he goes head-to-head with Mac.

- Joanna Cassidy has joined the cast of "Body Of Proof". On the ABC drama, she is set to play the recurring part of Dr. Megan Hunt's (Dana Delany) mother.

- Malcolm McDowell will reprise his role of Britt Styles, leader of the Visualize Self-Realization Center on the next season of "The Mentalist".

And per Variety, Jeff Goldblum has turned in his badge for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent". If, and that's a big "if", the show will get a tenth season on USA, Goldblum chose not to be part of it, "due to the uncertainty of the show's future".

See, I told you it was a massive one…

FX Renews LOUIE, Orders U.S.S. Alabama Pilot, Addresses DAMAGES Situation

FX is holding its portion of the TCA Summer Press Tour today, and, to start things off on a good note, FX president John Landgraf has announced that the cable network has renewed its freshman comedy "Louie" for a second season of 13 episodes, the Futon Critic reports. This after six episodes of the first season have aired.

Additionally, FX has ordered a comedy pilot from the folks behind "Reno 911", Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant ."U.S.S. Alabama" is a partially scripted comedy set in space in a distant future, centering on a group of spacefarers who are not too bright - just like the cops in "Reno 911".

Landgraf also pointed out that the deal for DirecTV to air the fourth season of "Damages" exclusively came to fruition after DirecTV was willing to underwrite a substantial amount financially in a deal that was very aggressively pushed by Sony. But DirecTV wanted it exclusively, so FX agreed to step aside to let the show continue.

TCA Press Tour: FOX

Hello Folks

A bit later than usual, here is the overview from FOX TCA day, again gathered from various sources.

- FOX Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said that there are currently no deals in place for any new judges on "American Idol", but some of the reports concerning possible candidates to judge next season are "accurate", while others are "wildly inaccurate". So, basically, he's saying nothing… except that the new judges will be in place next month.

- The renewal of Thursday night is a first for FOX in its history. Now, is this cause for celebration or for lament?

- The panel for "Running Wilde" was apparently hilarious. The show will undergo a major overhaul before it launches in the fall, including adapting some notes from Kevin Reilly to ground the show more. Creator Mitch Hurwitz and his team promise a different show than "Arrested Development", but at least equally funny. "Running Wilde", however, should appeal to a broader audience You know, being funny never was the problem with "Arrested Development", but where were all those viewers it should have had?

- The "Arrested Development" movie is still breathing. A script is halfway complete. OK, then, just another year or so before it is complete then?

- "Lone Star" creator Kyle Killen said that the show is pretty much "'Dallas' without the cheese". The show is either gonna be a huge hit or a "spectacular failure". Nothing in between. “We hope to go a couple of seasons before we have hair-pulling cat fights.” OK then, a failure it is… who wants to wait that long for the juicy bits?

- "Glee" will get a bit smaller next season, co-creator Ryan Murphy said. “We’re scaling it back and concentrating on the stories.” This means only four or five musical numbers per episode next season and supporting characters will get more screen time. From a music standpoint, look for a Britney Spears-themed episode, a SuperBowl hour and a Christmas episode, which hopefully will have Susan Boyle as a guest star.

- Paul McCartney sent in a mix tape for consideration on "Glee".

- Adam Shankman will direct one of the first 10 episodes of season 2.

OK, that's all from FOX. Today is FX' turn.

2010/08/02

FOX Pushes TERRA NOVA To Fall 2011

One thing from today's FOX TCA Summer Press Tour executive session that I think deserves mentioning in a separate article.

FOX has pushed its new dinosaur adventure drama "Terra Nova" to the fall of 2011. The sheer scope and dimension of the production called for it, FOX Entertainment President Kevin Reilly explained today.

“It was mainly due to the scope [Terra Nova] was going to take. We went into it knowing it was going to be ambitious. It really became apparent that we had to do this show right. We’ll have an enormous jump on the pilot, and on the marketing side, we’ll let people understand the show.” He went on to say: ""'Terra Nova' will be on the of the most visually stimulating and dramatically grand series to air on network television. It deserves to have an equally unique launch to distinguish that the show is unlike any other, and its spring promotional platform will give us the perfect opportunity to introduce this bold show to audiences."

Producers are currently scouting locations for the shoot which is set for October. Jason O'Mara ("Life On Mars") will star as Jim Shannon, who takes his family back in time, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Casting for other key roles is underway.

The show will get a preview next May, with the first season beginning in the fall, which is the same way "Glee" was launched last year.

TCA Press Tour: ABC

Hello Folks

Gathered from various sources, here's what went down in ABC's portion of the TCA Summer Press Tour - which also includes ABC Family, of course.

- Well first off, ABC Communications chief Kevin Brockman brought in a pink elephant, to the laughter of many. The "elephant in the room" was of course the switch on the top, with Steve McPherson having exited his post as entertainment president, and former ABC Family chief Paul Lee now officially announced as his replacement. And from what I gather, he did very well without saying much.

- OK, that one above is normally part of the stuff I tend to skip, but it was cute. Anyway, let's go to the juicy bits now, shall we? - Or, better, a semi-juicy bit. Paul Lee acknowledged that canceling shows with a small, but loyal following is hard. Point in case: "The Middleman". Even Lee "loved" that show, and he still gets letters, but "we are all slaves to ratings", he said. Yeah, and we viewers are all slaves to the networks and their sometimes questionable decisions regarding their shows, but we get you, Paul…

- Don't worry, Lee said he won't be making changes on the fall schedule, saying that late changes could only hurt the launch of the new season. "We're all locked and loaded."

- OK, but now, the really juicy bits. Balthazar Getty is off "Brothers & Sisters" - effective immediately. When the show returns for its fifth season on September 26, Tommy Walker will be MIA. His absence, which was a "creative decision", will be explained in the episode. How about "Where's Tommy?" - "Don't know."- "Oh…OK."

- Nathan Lane has booked a guest starring spot on "Modern Family". In an early episode of season two, he is set to play Cam's extravagant friend, Pepper.

- Don't expect ABC to become more like ABC Family now because of Lee at the helm. He knows about different programming environments, having run BBC America earlier.

- Steve Levitan of "Modern Family" wishes his show would not be available online - because those views aren't properly monetized. He lobbies that roughly two million viewers watch the show on other media than ad-supported TV. Well, take a hint from The CW, Steve… they tried it with "Gossip Girl". Result: Zilch. No better ratings. But a lot of bad propaganda from the fans…

- Paul Lee certainly loves "Modern Family": “I feel very, very lucky that I what I consider to be the best new comedy on television is on this network."

- Matthew Perry hopes for some "Friends" stunt casting around the third season of his new show "Mr. Sunshine". Well, we gotta hand it to him, he's optimistic…

- About his character on "Mr. Sunshine", Perry quipped: "“This character was my life five years ago. I’m very in touch with that kind of selfish guy who wants a better life.” And on his movie success, or better, lack thereof, in the past years: "“You can tell how successful my movies have been by the fact that I’m here.” Take that, TV!

- On "No Ordinary Family" being a clone between "Heroes" and "The Incredibles", its star Michael Chikis responded: "This is "No Ordinary Family". It’s a fun throwback to some of the action-adventure shows I used to watch and love as a kid blended with a family show." So, yeah, completely different…

- On being asked what turned him to "No Ordinary Family" after his much more violent part in "The Shield", Chiklis said: "“I had an opportunity to do something that had mass appeal. I want to entertain people -- 8, 18 or 80 (years old) appealed to me."
Fine, just don't beat anyone with chains now, OK? Because that would be hard to explain to an 8-year old…

- JoAnna Garcia confessed that it was her who recruited Jennifer Finnigan to play her sister in "Better For You". And Finnigan made sure Josh Cooke plays her boyfriend. OK, now we really know why so many fresh actors with no connections don't get any jobs…

- New series "My Generation" launches in the very competitive timeslot of Thursday at 8. Exec producer Warren Littlefield of cours knows that. “It’s a very competitive world. It’s not just about the network choices; each household has a hundred other channels. We don’t ask for guarantees. We know there are no guarantees. We respect that it’s a tough time period. The only thing we can do is do the best possible show we can.” Don't they all?

- Dana Delany said while doing research for her new show "Body Of Proof", she also went to witness an autopsy. "It’s fantastic. It will make you take care of your body.” And sure is less expensive than all those Pilates classes…

- "Detroit 1-8-7" will undergo major retooling to remove the docu-style approach of the show. The reason: The highly publicized shooting of a 7-year old during a police raid, with a camera crew from A&E's "First 48" filming the whole thing. Detroit has now banned news crew ride-alongs with law enforcement, which forced producers of "Detroit 1-8-7" to adapt their way of storytelling.

OK, that's a wrap. FOX is up to close things off for the broadcast networks today.
