ABC Family Picks Up MELISSA & JOEY
Melissa Joan Hart ("Sabrina The Teenage Witch") is back on our TV screens. And she brings Joey Lawrence along.
ABC Family has announced that it has picked up multi-camera comedy "Melissa & Joey" to series with an order for 10 episodes.
The story centers on Mel (Hart), the grown-up former wild child of a political family who is now a local politician herself. When her sister ends up in prison and brother-in-law flees after a scandal hits, Mel must take responsibility for her teenaged niece Lennox and pre-adolescent nephew Ryder. Spread too thin to manage by herself, help comes in the unlikely form of Joe (Lawrence) who, desperate for a job, moves in and becomes the family’s “manny.”
The show, (which has a "Who's The Boss?" vibe, don't you think?) will premier this year.

NBC Renews PARKS & RECREATION, MTV Orders More JERSEY SHORE
Hello Folks!
Some news from the renewal front which might make some fans happy, others might be raising their voices in protest.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, NBC has ordered a third season of its Amy Poehler comedy "Parks And Recreation". The early renewal was done strictly for production reasons to lock the actors' schedules, and doesn't reflect the chances of the other NBC Thursday comedies, the trade reports.
In other renewal news, MTV has picked up its controversial reality series "Jersey Shore" for a second season. The full cast will return for another 12 episodes, which will air mid-to-late summer. Production is set to begin soon, but with New Jersey being in winter, the cast will move to a different location.

Pilot News: Joanna Garcia, Forest Whitaker, Martin Henderson Join Projects
Yeah, I know, where's the pilot coverage?
Well, I do cover pilot season this year, but I only cover the casting process, as I did in previous years. Otherwise I'd be quitting my full-time job if I wanted to cover every single development.
Anyway, let's delve in, shall we? Expect two to three pilot updates per week in the near future. Today, I'll also recap a bit what happened during the past few days.
- Joanna Garcia has been cast in an untitled Shana Goldberg-Meehan multicamera comedy for ABC/WBTV. It centers on two sisters in different stages of their romantic relationships. One is happily married, the other (Garcia) gets pregnant and ends up marrying her lover.
- Forest Whitaker is in final negotiations to play the lead in the upcoming "Criminal Minds" spinoff at CBS. His role, Cooper, is the squad leader of another group of profilers working outside the FBI bureaucracy. Off the radar for the past eight years, Cooper is described as a former star profiler of the Behavioral Analyssis Unit and a father figure to the other teammembers. The spinoff will be launced back-door as an episode of "Criminal Minds" later this season.
- Martin Henderson has been tapped as one of the leads in the upcoming Shonda Rhimes drama pilot "Off The Map" for ABC. It's about three doctors who are looking for a fresh start in an isolated tropical clinic. Henderson plays one of the doctors.
- Director Alex Graves ("The Nine", "Fringe", "Journeyman") will direct the Jerry Bruckheimer pilot "The Whole Truth" for ABC. The drama covers the building of a court case from both the perspective of the defense and prosecution.

ABC Cancels UGLY BETTY
After all those renewals, it was all but a given that there would be a cancellation that puts a damper on those happy feelings…
Per EW's Michael Ausiello, ABC has informed the producers of its comedy "Ugly Betty" that the current fourth season would be the show's last.
The network has made the decision early to give the showrunners the opportunity to craft a satisfying ending to the show. Exec producer Silvio Horta and ABC Entertainment president Steven McPherson had this to say:
“We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”
What do you think? Is it time to end the show? Or would you have loved to see more?

90210 Says Goodbye To Two
E!Online's Kristin Dos Santos reports today that both Rob Estes and Jennie Garth will leave "90210" when the second season is over.
The reason? The producers around Rebecca Kirshner are looking to focus solely on the younger cast.
"They just don't want the old people on the new show anymore," a CW insider tells Kristin, while another adds that producers are "trying to establish a separate identity for the new show."
Rob Estes has released the following statement. "This is my final season on 90210 and I wish the show, cast and crew nothing but the best. I am looking forward to spending time with my kids and exploring other opportunities."
And a rep for the show adds this: "This is Rob's last season on 90210. He's a talented actor and we couldn't have asked for a better Harry Wilson. But if fans tune in, they'll understand why Rob's character is leaving."

VERONICA MARS Movie Not Happening - For Now
Hello Folks!
The Futon Critic has talked to "Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas at the TCA Winter Press Tour this week, when he was there to promote the second season of "Party Down".
During the interview, Thomas was asked (for the upteenth time I'm sure) if the much-hyped "Veronica Mars" movie is going to happen after all.
Well, doesn't look like it.
"No. I would write it if anyone would finance it. If anyone's interested in making that movie I am available, Kristen's [Bell] available. I would love to do it. I think the closest we came was Joel [Silver] pushing it at Warner Bros. and they didn't bite. It has sort of gone away."
Thomas went on to say that Kristen Bell jumped the gun when she told people that he had written a script. He has written a treatment, and is ready to put it into a script, but that's it.
While I doubt that this will stop fans from hoping, unfortunately, I think that this sort of puts the nail into that coffin.

Conan O'Brien Won't Host TONIGHT SHOW At 12:05 AM
Conan O'Brien has spoken out about the shenanigans surrounding NBC's late night dilemma. Here is his full statement:
People of Earth:
In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.
Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.
But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.
Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.
So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.
There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.
Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.
Yours,
Conan

TCA Winter Press Tour: CBS, Showtime, The CW, NBC
Hello Folks!
As you know, the TCA Winter Press Tour is currently being held, and this is the smaller of the two press tours. (The summer one is a much bigger event.)
Here's what went down at the CBS portion, aside from the bigger news already posted in seperate threads:
- 18 episodes of "Flashpoint" are in the can, and will make it to the air at some point, CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler confirmed. (A few of them already aired on Canada's CTV).
- CBS is still fond of Laurence Fishburne as the new lead on "CSI". "I think they're doing much better in finding Fishburne's character," Tassler said. "You can't deny Fishburne is a powerful actor and a force to be reckoned with."
CBS would welcome William Petersen back "with open arms" but there are no plans to have him appear on the show during the current season.
- The legal trouble Charlie Sheen is currently in shouldn't affect "Two And A Half Men". At least not for now…
- About the decision to air reality format "Undercover Boss" after the SuperBowl: ""We've seen five or six episodes; there is a tone to the show (that) we felt was a great fit," Tassler said. "We think we're going to launch another big branded reality show."
- "Moonlight" fans might want to suck this one up: Nina Tassler acknowledged that she was talking with producer Joel Silver recently. And a few cast members have been approached by Warner Bros. TV about maybe coming back together for a do-over.
But if anything like this should happen, it would probably not do so before 2011, since CBS is currently in the process of picking up the pilots for the 2010-2011 season.
But Tassler sure wants to keep lead Alex O'Loughlin around: “We love [Alex] and want him to stay around for a long time." Remember, this from the woman who brought back "Jericho". I wouldn't rule out anything at the moment.
From Showtime's panel:
- Showtime has picked up "The Big C" to series, starring Laura Linney, to air over the summer. The story about a suburban wife who shakes up her life after being diagnosed with cancer, has been picked up for 13 episodes.
- Also picked up is "The Borgias", a period drama starring Jeremy Irons, which is considered a follow-up to "The Tudors".
- The second season of "The United States Of Tara" promises to be a little more raunchy.
- Haaz Sleiman has left "Nurse Jackie" because his character Mo-Mo wasn't needed as a best friend for Jackie anymore, apparently. exec producer Linda Wallem said: "O'Hara took over the best friend role."
The CW:
- While it isn't a done deal, it looks like "Supernatural" might get a sixth season, and "Smallville" is looking good for season 10.
NBC:
- It's no surprise, but now it's official: "The Jay Leno Show" will exit NBC's primetime hour of 10 PM as of February 12. The announcement was made by NBC Chairman Jeff Gaspin. He said that while NBC was accepting Leno's ratings, the mounting presssure of the network's affiliate stations forced the headquarters to react in the end.
The network however is looking to keep Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon on the air. Gaspin proposed to the parties involved that Leno moves to 11:35 PM for a half-hour format, with Conan's "Tonight Show" launching at 12:05 AM, followed by "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" at 1:05 AM. However, no deals have been struck at this point. As for Carson Daly, NBC wants to keep him around, but it looks like "Last Call" is a goner.
- The above means that NBC is now looking to ramp up the scripted development to re-fill the 10 PM hour in the next season. After February 12, the slot might be filled by stuff like the fourth season of "Friday Night Lights" (currently airing on DirecTV), or the new season of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent". "Friday Night Lights" can start airing on NBC as early as March, according to contracts.
- NBC will go back to the traditional upfront format, and announcing its fall schedule in May like all the other networks.
- Howie Mandel is set to replace David Hasselhoff on "America's Got Talent".
- The future of "Heroes" is not set in stone yet. Entertainment president Angela Bromstad said that she's pleased with the ratings, and that creator Tim Kring is currently working on a pitch of an additional season.
- NBC is looking for a "Law & Order" set in Los Angeles. The original "L&O" is expected back in the fall.

TCA: THREE RIVERS Officially Canceled, NUMB3RS Still Alive And Well
EW's Michael Ausiello reports from the TCA Winter Press Tour that CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler just confirmed what most of us already knew.
Medical drama "Three Rivers" is officially canceled. ”We all know that when something is ‘on hiatus’ it’s code for something else,” was Tassler's way of saying it.
As for "Numb3rs", of whom many thought it was in big trouble after its season order was cut back to 16 episodes: The show is "absolutely still in consideration" for next season, Tassler says. The order was simply cut to make room for the new Jerry Bruckheimer medical drama "Miami Medical".

EW's Michael Ausiello reports today that Julie Benz, who had a shocking ending on last year's "Dexter" season finale, has been cast in a recurring role on ABC's "Desperate Housewives".
For at least three episodes, she is set to play Debbie, a stripper with a proverbial heart of gold, as well as a master in education. Susan offers her the possibility of leaving the disrobing business, and Debbie is very interested.
Benz' first appearance is set for February.
